You may or may not know this, but On September 23 Snapchat changed it’s name to Snap Inc. and introduced Spectacles. Spectacles, are a pair of sunglasses with a built in camera that records 10-second snippets of video, and posts directly to your Snapchat Story.

Now, you may be wondering – what is Snapchat and why is it such a big deal? Snapchat is a social network messaging app that took off as a tool for disappearing photos. It now has 150 million active daily users globally.

Google had a similar concept as Snapchat called Google Glass which retailed for $1,200 and was officially retired in January of 2015.

Snapchat or Snap Inc. is trying to win over its younger demographic of 13-34 years old with the $130 pair of Spectacles. The CEO Evan Speigel calls the video-sharing sunglasses “a toy” but sees an upside to freeing his app from smartphone cameras.

Let’s take a second to talk about Snapchat. Every day, I’m running into people who say, “I don’t understand how to use Snapchat or why I should be on it.” I’m going to help you understand why you or your brand should be on Snapchat and killing it.

Four years ago, Snapchat was created by Evan Spiegel at Stanford University. At the time, it was known as the “sexting app.” That’s how most people still think of Snapchat.

Fast forward to today. There are over 200 million active users and 7 billion videos created daily on the platform. The White House is on Snapchat and Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders is utilizing Snapchat to reach a younger demographic. Advertising on Snapchat is going to explode in 2016. Little less than a month ago, Snapchat launched On-Demand Geofilters. It allows people and businesses to create and purchase custom Geofilters for a house party, wedding, a coffee shop or a campus wide-event. It also allows advertisers to run an event specific advertisement in a specific area. This is going to change the way advertisers reach a specific audience in 2016.

On St. Patricks Day, I put the Snapchat Custom Geofilters to the test. I created a Happy St. Patrick’s Day Geofilter Sponsored by Andrew Weber Photography. I used these in two specific areas in downtown Toledo, where large amounts of people were going to parties.
