The day has finally come, the 56th running of the Daytona 500. After a week and a half of covering, practices, qualifying, Budweiser Duels, ARCA race, Camping World Truck Series, Xfinity Race it was time to shoot the Super Bowl of NASCAR. The Daytona 500!

I worked with three other photographers to cover the race, Peter Casey, Mike Dinovo and Jasen Vinlove. We arrived at the track at 8am, to avoid the traffic.

Due to lot happening the day before, we had to get out and make features around the track. Kyle Busch wouldn’t be racing in the Great American Race due to crashing in the Xfinity race and braking his leg. His brother Kurt, is suspended from NASCAR indefinitely.

I was assigned to cover storyline of Kurt and Kyle Busch. Showing, that the “Outlaw” won’t be racing and signs showing support of Kyle since he had surgery on his leg.

Please enjoy the photos.

After covering NASCAR Media day inside a stuffy room with hundreds of people, it was very nice to get out into the Florida sunshine and shoot some NASCAR Practice. The photos below are combined Sprint Unlimited Practice and Daytona 500 practice from Friday night and Saturday.

NASCAR: Media Day

I am currently sitting on a patio in downtown Daytona Beach where it’s 65 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Sorry, friends and family stuck in the cold. I am down here for 14 days to cover my 6th Daytona 500. The Daytona 500 is the Super Bowl of NASCAR, the biggest race of the year where everyone is watching. I am very fortunate enough to work with another great crew from USA Today.

Here are my favorite images from media day.

NASCAR: Sprint Unlimited-Practice

The Sprint Unlimited formally known as the Budweiser Shootout, is an invitation only race take kicks off Speedwek for the Daytona 500. Only 28 cars are in the race compared to 43 in the Daytona 500. I was super excited for Fridays practice as it started at 5pm and the sun has been setting around 6pm, so I knew that would make for some killer pictures.

On with the photos.

NASCAR: Daytona 500-Media Day

The Daytona 500 Media Day is very similar to the Super Bowl Media Day, where the drivers spend hours doing television and print interviews. As this event isn’t really meant for photographers it’s a great opportunity to knock out headshots of drivers for the upcoming year.

Once I got to work, I was quickly frustrated with crappy backgrounds and light that was hitting the drivers that was causing crazy shadows. Instead of getting more frustrated I just told my self, it’s what I make of it, which is true for everything. So I put my game face and went to work.

NASCAR: Daytona 500-Features

Greetings from Daytona Beach, Florida home of the Daytona 500 and also my home for the next 18 days. The Daytona 500 is the Super Bowl of NASCAR, two weeks of events and racing leading up to the biggest NASCAR race of the year. It’s especially important each year because drivers change teams and also get new sponsors so it takes a little bit of time to get accommodated to.

Since today was an off day, I headed to the track to pick up credentials, mark spots in the media room knock out some features.

Tomorrow is Daytona 500 Media Day which is just as big as the Super Bowl Media Day.
