An aerial view of Daytona Beach

An aerial view of Daytona Beach

Some of you may know, I have a slight addiction to aerial photography. I have photographed from airplanes, helicopters, hot air balloons and now the Goodyear Blimp.

During my 5 1/2 hour ride in the Goodyear Blimp, I got to see a variety of different things in the Daytona Beach area. So I wanted to share some of the random things I shot, while I was in the blimp.

Thanks to Goodyear and their PR team for getting me up in the blimp after being cancelled a few times to due high winds.

The day has finally come, the 56th running of the Daytona 500. After a week and a half of covering, practices, qualifying, Budweiser Duels, ARCA race, Camping World Truck Series, Xfinity Race it was time to shoot the Super Bowl of NASCAR. The Daytona 500!

I worked with three other photographers to cover the race, Peter Casey, Mike Dinovo and Jasen Vinlove. We arrived at the track at 8am, to avoid the traffic.

Due to lot happening the day before, we had to get out and make features around the track. Kyle Busch wouldn’t be racing in the Great American Race due to crashing in the Xfinity race and braking his leg. His brother Kurt, is suspended from NASCAR indefinitely.

I was assigned to cover storyline of Kurt and Kyle Busch. Showing, that the “Outlaw” won’t be racing and signs showing support of Kyle since he had surgery on his leg.

Please enjoy the photos.

NASCAR: Alert Today Florida 300

Following the Kurt Busch NASCAR appeal across the street from the track, I had to hustle to get to the roof for the Alert Today Florida 300 Xfinity Race. The race for sure didn’t disappoint. Half way through the race, Daniel Suarez got turned sideway and hit Regan Smith (7), which caused Smith to barrel roll through the tri-oval. It was one of the best crash sequences I have shot.

The photos below are shot with a Canon 1DX, 600mm lens with a 1.4x converter for 840mm. I shot 52 straight frames on the camera, which out missing a beat. Of the 52 frames, NOT one of the frames was out of focus. After shooting that crash sequence, the 1DX puts the Nikon D4s to shame.

NASCAR: Nextera Energy Resources 250

Earlier in the week, I posted a blog with photos of the Goodyear Blimp. (BLOG) I was suppose to go for a ride in the blimp, but due to high winds it I never made it up. The awesome PR staff at Goodyear, kept working with me to get me up in the air.

On Friday evening, I spent 5 1/2 hours in the Goodyear Blimp shooting the the Camping World Truck race.

Here are my favorite photos from the Blimp. I will post another blog later showing the inside of the blimp and talk more specifics.

As some of you may or may not know, that Kurt Busch was suspended by NASCAR indefinitely on Friday afternoon due to the legal case that he beat his ex-girlfriend.

One of our reporters let me know that Kurt Busch was going to appeal his suspension at 12pm across the street from the Daytona International Speedway.

I arrived at the building at 11:15am hoping to get him arriving into the building. But Kurt arrived around 10am, so I missed him. Let the waiting game begin! With a few dozen tv stations, writers and other photographers, we were escorted into a room inside the building .

Having covered stuff like this in the past, no way Kurt Busch was gonna talk to any media. So myself and another photographer waited outside for 3 1/2 hours. After about 2 hours, we found the car the Kurt Busch arrived in. There was a D/O parking pass in the window which means Driver/Owner. Then in the back if the car, was luggage with StewartHass Racing on it, so that gave it away.

Shortly after, a guy got into the car and drove around the parking lot trying to avoid us. As I followed the car, a few minutes later it pulled in front of the building and out walked Kurt Busch from side door of the building where no one was expecting it.

So after 4 hours of waiting, it was a 30 second shoot.

NASCAR: Goodyear Blimp

I was offered the opportunity to go for a ride in the Goodyear Blimp during an off day from shooting NASCAR practice at the track. But just my luck, due to high winds my flight was canceled. I was even reschedule for a few days later and it was again cancelled. But the PR guys at Goodyear still allowed me to shoot some cool images of the blimp while it was on the ground.

I have one more opportunity to go up so we shall see!
